You want to be careful when choosing the breeder of any type of dog, but if you are looking for a pit bull for sale then you should take extra caution and check out the breeder thoroughly. It is no secret that pit bulls are temperamental and quite possibly dangerous when they have not been breed for the right characteristics. When unethical or untrained breeders start breeding pit bulls it is very easy for things to go wrong. I am sure you wouldn't want to put yours or your family's lives at risk by purchasing a potentially dangerous animal. Following are some of the things that you absolutely must do before answering those pit bulls for sale ads.
- Visit the breeder's place of business.
- Check to see it the place is clean and odor free.
- Are the dogs well socialized?
- Do you feel comfortable around the dogs?
- Get references for people who have purchased dogs from them before.
- Visit the dog if at all possible.
- Are the dogs friendly to strangers?
- Is there more than one dog in the house?
- Are the dogs around children?
- Check the breeder's reputation with your local humane society.
- Check with the officers directly.
- Ask volunteers what they know about the breeder.
- Never adopt a pit bull from a shelter.
When you make your visit to the breeder's place of business the main thing you are looking for is the interaction between the dogs as a group. Pit bulls that have a tendency to attack humans will always be overly aggressive toward other dogs and the breeder will keep them separated. If the dogs are kept in individual cages then there is a very good chance that this breeder is either inexperienced at breeding for the right traits, or specifically breeding for aggressiveness. I would caution you to stay away from these animals and most certainly don't buy one. If the dogs are barking at each other and you feel uncomfortable then leave as quickly as you can, these are not dogs you would want to bring home to your family.
When you get the references for people who have purchased dogs from the breeder, make the effort to actually visit the dogs. Interact with the dogs and take note of how comfortable you feel with them. All dogs regardless of their breed take a little time to warm up to strangers but it really shouldn't take more than 15 minutes. If after that amount of time the dog is still leery of your presence then they have not been properly socialized and you should start looking for a different breeder.
When checking with your local humane society it is always best to talk with volunteers, they usually know all of the information you are looking for and are under no obligation to keep any secrets. People love to share their knowledge and if you find the right volunteer you will get all of the information that the humane society has on that particular breeder. If the humane society knows nothing about your particular breeder then it is possible that they are a backyard breeder without the proper knowledge to breed pit bulls for sale.

I’m so tired of reading and listening to bull shit about bullies! They are one of the best dog breeds around! Look, if people don’t know how to handle their dog, no matter which breed or mix it is, the dog will misbehave. Just to make my point, let’s look at some breeds and their issues… Poodles (toys through standards): when not exercised they entertain themselves… by destroying whatever’s in the house/the yard. It is in their breed to have energy and to have brains that need stimulation… they’re hunting dogs! When not socialized they are aggressive towards other dogs. It’s in their breed to be aloof and protective of their owner! If you won a gunning dog, you better exercise them… it’s in their breed to run. If you own a sight hound you better keep them on a leash… it’s in their breed to chase a lure (even if it’s the neighbors’ cat). If you own a guard dog or a Bully, you better train them from a young age… they are powerful dogs. Now lets look at Chihuahuas (and other miniature dogs). In my many years of experience with dogs, I have never seen as many full out attacks on humans/other animals with large dogs as I have with minies! Though for some reason, that’s completely beyond me, no one notices it when you’re barked at by a mean Chihuahua or “nipped” by one! It's NOT cute and it's NOT a “nip” damn it, it’s a bite! Just because the snout is not as big or strong, it’s still a BITE! So why don’t we all start educating and disciplining our dogs no matter what breed they are. And why don’t we all start getting on to owners with badly behaving animals, no matter how big their dogs are!

I WORK AT AN animal shelter and i dont think all pits are mean or agressive... ive only worked there a year and only saw maybe 4 pits that were agresive or just kennel stressed... if i go in there kennel to check for adoption they all seem fine and very loving... even the really big red nose pits that have attacks on their record... but saddly not all pit bulls go into adoptions. a lot are PTS for reputation but we always try our best to examine them and test them.
so basically your saying that guns don't kill people people kill people just about dogs. ive raised about 20 pitt bulls and sold pits at any age and never has any complaints on behavior. the problem is if you look at the stats the death related dog attacks there are about 10 different types of dogs accept that pits are at the top of the list and are far ahead. so people dont realise that most pits back in the day were bred for hunting, and its natural for them to hunt. but if your train your dogs correctly we shouldn't be on the top of that list.

Well I have four kids and 4 American Pitbull terriers. I have been raising or around this breed since I was 3 years old and I am now 28. I have been bitten 1 time when I had my dog all hyped up and as soon as I yelled he released and I was not hurt. He loved me to much to hurt me. The only problems with pitbulls is the owners who take advantage of that love from the and their desire to please their owners. Some people take advantage of this and use them for purposes other than companianship and fun. They are a real joy to be around. Really the good temperment dogs are into whatever the owner is in my opinion. If I am wanting to lay around and be lazy my dog is right at my feet doing the same, and on the other hand if I want to run 3 miles that day he is just as game to do that as well. All they want to do is please us no matter what that is, so dont hate the dog hate the bad owners. I dont believe its all the breeders either cause I know some good breeders who just sold a few dogs to bad owners as well.

We have pits come in and there the sweetest things. The people in the photos probally were messing with the dogs. SAVE THE PIT ITS NOT THERE FAULT.
i have had lots of pitbulls! they are the best dog i have ever owned. my boxer and pitbull saved me from a house robbery! they cornered the robber who had a knife and didnt even attack him!! you shouldnt punish the dog because some dumb people have bred them wrong or RAISED the poor baby wrong as pitbull owners say dont punish the breed punish the deed! and do ur research right before you judge or actually meet and interact with one first
all dogs should be treated like children. Like children, if not treated right might turn and defend themselves. It is how you raise your dog. for example, you trauned or teached your child to play football, that's what they will learn. treat a child badly, and they will never forget.sooner or later they will come back for revenge. Pitbulls are great pets and dogs. If you treat them right and show them love, they will show the same to you or anybody, because that is how they were brought up. Its is the owner who decided to get a pitbull, so they should know all the facts about their dog. It is the peoples fault. Not the dog. keep pitbulls. Just like there is good and bad people, there are good and bad dogs to.
I have 3 Pit Bulls :o) They visit the nursing homes here in Kentucky, one is a therapy dog. Very well Loved and Adored.. It's sad you dont know how Loving these animals is... Maybe you will think different one day I hope. Do you know how many people who has died from horses, cars planes boats. Should we make all horses into soap? should we junk all cars planes, and sink all boats? Its sad, Lady white and brindle Pit Bull has helped my son to walk who has cerebral palsey, when he was just a child. She also woke him up when he would stop breathing, she was his best friend, If he was still around to write a comment on here I know he would, But he went to heaven at a very young age of 18. Mexican 13 needs to go on somewhere with the race bs. I am white and i own 4 pitbulls. they are the best dogs in the world. Its not WHITE people that are afraid of the dog. I live in a very cultural neighborhood and i get the same reaction from all races when i tell them my dogs are pits. my dogs have made several people come to love the breed.

i own alot of pit bulls.... they are not all mean in fact over 85% of pits are family dogs, hunting dogs ect. it is the way that you treat them and raise them. if you want a dog that listens and is a nice dog you have to be sturn but you dont hav to make them mean. none of mine would EVER hurt a fly let alone a human. and most of my dogs come from a fighting bloodline. dont get me wrong i hate dog fighting. i am just saying it is how you treat the dogs as to how they are going to act. i hate when people try to make the whole breed look bad. i am one of those people that is going to prove those other people wrong just wait and see....

You all are in denial..Someone just got through saying that Chihuahas can be vicious just as much as the other dog...and that is this posters point..He wants to get it across how to recognize a pit with socialization problems that could lead to a potential problem down the line..That is all!! I appreciate it because I have two pitties..and this puppy I just brought home is showing major signs of aggresion. I've got my eye on him though, and he came from a home where the mother was caged up and seperated from the other two dogs that were also tied up and separated from each other..I didn't think anything of it then, but now it has me taking things into consideration.

I have a pitbull that IS mean. We have taken him to the main pitbull trainer/rescuer in our area, and she said he is dog and human aggressive. She advised us to euthanize him. I wasn't shocked by hearing it. I knew that could be a possibility based on his behavior towards us at home. That was why I took him to see her. Before you blame the dog, listen to the entire story. We got him when he was 5 weeks old. He was rescued from a rundown hotel room with the rest of his litter. He was being raised to be a fighting dog. Whoever was keeping him was starving them, making them bite and growl before they could have food. These baby puppies were being pinched, kicked, and hit and then rewarded with food that they desperately needed to survive for their aggressive behavior in return. He is almost a year old now. He is house trained. He has NEVER torn anything in our house up. He has never chewed on furniture. He lifted his leg in our house to pee ONE TIME, and when I corrected him he never did it again. He is smart. However, he is very stubborn, hyperactive, dominant, and all those other things that people don't like in pitbulls. We have had him neutered, have a crate to keep him in when we are not home, and have a muzzle that we put on him all the time outside- even if we are in our own backyard. He deserves to live. Who knows... in a year or two after working with him, we'll see how he does. My husband and I don't have children. I figure we are his best shot at getting to a point he can relax, quit trying to attack the world, and have a normal life.

I've owned 3 pits in my life. Well my husband has. All his friends have them. These dogs aren't popular with my husband and all his friends because of how good they are. Everytime we go visit one of his friends they're talking about something their dog did this time. Then dogs we've had are untrainable I talked to my vet they said pits were once good dogs but do to all the inbreeding most of them have genetic disorders this is part of the reason they r all so dumb. They're prone to bone skin and eye problems. Underbites. Aggression. Digestional problems. This is just a few of the things. My dog will go out in the back yard and eat rocks and sticks and dirt thencome n the house and throw it up. They repeatedly get n the trash climb on my kitchen table jump all over company. Knock my kids down eat their own turds chew up my furniture and that's just me getting started. I know this isn't specific to just me. All my husbands friends deal with the same shit. His friends don't buy these dogs because they're smart or pretty. It's because they scare people. That's why people want them they think they're bad ass. They're r plenty of big smart dogs out there. Why don't his friends own labs or golden ret. Because people aren't scared of them. They aren't the cool thing to do. I've owned plenty of these dogs and been around them half my life. I'm not gonna pretend they're something they aren't. I've seen his friends dogs attack and kil other dogs for no reason we had one that tried to bite my daughter for no reason These dogs have earned their rep all by themselves. Keep blaming people if u will but people aren't the reason wild animals attack people and other animals. It's n thier blood so that's what they do. Get it people. I can't wait til these dogs r banned from everywhere so I never have to own another of these ridiculously stupid dogs again. The American Pitbull Terrier is not aggressive toward humans like stated in this page. On the contrary pitbulls are breed to be loving dogs. Even those evil dog fighters breed dogs that have good temperament toward humans since it makes the dog easier to handle. I think any dog that attacks should be evaluated to see if it needs to be put down, but that goes for all breeds not just certain ones. Even statistics about APBT related bites are over-inflated because they don't only include the APBT, but they include the Staffordshire Terrier, and Bull Terrier, and any other breed that looks like the APBT. Punish the deed not the breed.
And to Smalls I say you just decribed bad behaviors in your dogs that occur when you don't train your dogs to have good manners or they're not getting enough exercise. And the reason your husband's friends dogs are aggerssive, well you answered that question yourself. The dogs were bought with the purpose of being aggressive toward humans and scarring people.

It is estimated that there is a current average of 3 million "Pit Bulls" living in the United States and only 1 in 600 will successfully find a "forever" home. Sadly, for every 1 "Pit Bull" placed in a loving home there are 599 killed. Shockingly, that statistic unfortunately does not exclude puppies!
Roughly 200 "Pit Bulls" are killed each day in Los Angels alone because there are not enough homes for the ever-growing population of unwanted dogs. This is a frustrating problem due to over-breeding either intentionally or accidentally. Either way you look at it, it comes down to irresponsible actions by irresponsible and or greedy humans. Many people may not realize that any dog not spayed or neutered is a potential contributor to this terrible problem. The average fertile dog can produce 2 litters in one year. The average number of puppies in a canine litter is 6-10. In six years, one female dog and her offspring can theoretically produce 67,000 dogs..many or most of which will end up dead.
There are between 4,000 and 6,000 animal shelters in the United States. The number of cats and dogs entering those shelters each year is roughly 6-8 million! However, only 30% of the dogs and 2%-5% of the cats are actually reclaimed by their owners. This means the total number of cats and dogs euthanized by shelters annually is 3-4 million! It is estimated that 1 million of those dogs are "Pit Bulls".
Surely you can see how over-breeding has negatively affected the lives of so many dogs. It is a fact that "Pit Bull" breeders are directly responsible for a significant percentage of the estimated 1 million "Pit Bulls" killed by euthanasia each year nationwide.
I have 2 pitbulls - the female is loveable but has a tendency to nip and bite albeit softly - but she is all muscle and I consider her, although loveable n mostly sweet - the unpredictable one. Tony the male is super energetic, bossy, a whiner and acts spolied at times, and yet, I would trust him more than his female companion. yet he is the one I don't really care for because he is always challenging my alpha authority. I really think that pit-bulls are more primal dogs and should be left to fend for themselves in the wild like coyotes and wolves. I think that yes, they can be trained and taken into homes, but so can coyotes and wolves when they are just pups! They are quite territorial and this is their purpose I believe - to be simply guard dogs, not cuddles and hugs.

Ive seen both ends and have dealt with these dogs for years. Ive owned several hundred of these dogs and they ARE agressive dogs. NO MEDIUM OR LARGE DOG should be left alone with a child because a canine in general is a territorrial and naturally agressive animal. Also, pit bull type dogs do not belong with just anyone and do not belong in certain areas. I have had only 2 dogs in my entire life that did bite, and a few I knew would bite if pushed to that reaction. I HATE A MAN BITING DOG!!!!!Not a problem for me because I have always controlled my dogs and kept them on my property. I do believe these dogs are the best breed in the world and no other dog suits me. BUT I DID MOVE AWAY TO HAVE DOGS! I didnt sit there and let the SPCA get my dogs, which is EXACTLY what they were trying to do! BUT, I COULD NOT CONTROLL THOSE DOGS IN THE URBAN CITY AND NEITHER CAN YOU!!! I own 2 pits right now. The breeder-bred blue is trustworthy with all people in all scenerios. My home-bred red-nosed buckskin is dangerous. He is dog-aggressive, and stranger aggressive. Both of them could easily break through a window or storm door to chase something. I have purchased 6' fencing inclosing my back yard. I have to put screen door guards on the inside of all of my glass windows and storm doors. I know my dogs. I keep them appart. I try to think way ahead of them. I OWN A DANGEROUS PIT and a gentle pit. They were both trained the same way by me and my husband since they were 12 weeks old. The brown is 6 yrs and the blue is 3. The brown is my danger-dog...
