Play it Smart

In today's technology driven world, we are able to get more done, faster: yet many of us still can't find enough hours in the day. I have multiple jobs and roles to fill, so my attention to any one endeavor is limited. Here is how I've learned to play it SMART to get more accomplished and find time to enjoy my life along the way:

Strategize - No matter how much you wish it was so there will not be more hours in the day. You'll have to make due with twenty four, just like the rest of us. That's why you need a strategy for going in. Determine what needs to be accomplished and what can wait? Work on the most important tasks first. Too often I'll do a small task because I have a few minutes and can squeeze it in. The problem is I rarely get a big chunk of time to start and finish a large task in one sitting. If it's a priority, big or small, start it first.

Manage - There are numerous resources dedicated to the fine art of Time Management. Techniques may include goal setting, creating lists to track your progress and multitasking.

I rely on time savers such as:

1. Paying bills on line - Reoccurring bills are scheduled so not only do I save precious minutes, I pay my bills on time.

2. Shopping on line - I've bought everything from books to medications. I save time by not going to the store, wandering isles or waiting in line,

3. Optimize Errands - I go where I can get the most done in one place: a car wash that also offers oil changes, within walking distance of a nail salon and sandwich shop. This fills a lunch hour, but I can accomplish four tasks. Some department stores are becoming more full service with groceries, automotive service, gas pumps, plus nail saloons, photo studios, hair saloons and postal stores.

Acknowledge - Your limits, because even with the best of intentions, you probably can't do everything that's asked of you. Sometimes you'll have to say no. It's better to say no up front, then to apologize later when you fail to deliver on a promise.

Remember - To take care of yourself. You must be your number one priority. Don't let yourself get run down, out of shape, sick and tired just so you can finish one more project. Your actions should move you closer to a goal; to improve the quality of your life; to make you happier and healthier. If your activities are at odds with these goals, reconsider why you're doing them. Maybe you're just trying to distract yourself because you're unhappy and trying to fill every minute to fill your soul.

Track - Your progress. I always take time to look back to see how far I've come, to consider the obstacles I encountered and how I overcame them. I look for opportunities to improve my performance going forward. I keep track of where I am, to verify I'm still on course for my destination. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed with it all, but when I look back and see how much I've accomplished already, I get a boost of confidence.
